Kgalagadi Transfrontier: The Pajero Route Guide

2 min read Published June 21, 2026

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is the definitive South African Pajero trip — red dunes, long calcrete tracks, and the kind of remoteness that rewards a properly prepared 4×4. This guide covers the route, the conditions, and exactly how to set your Pajero up before you point it north.

Route & Access

Most owners enter via Twee Rivieren from the Upington side. The tar runs out long before the gate, so air down before the corrugations begin. The Nossob and Auob riverbed roads are the heart of the park — deep, soft sand in places, especially after midday heat. Run 4H on the firmer calcrete and drop to 4L for the sand patches and dune crossings on the wilderness trails.

Tyre Pressures & Recovery

  • Calcrete tracks: 1.8–2.0 bar to soak up the corrugations and save your bushes
  • Soft Kalahari sand: drop to 1.2–1.4 bar and keep momentum
  • Always carry a compressor, two recovery boards and a long-handle spade

The Super Select system earns its keep here — being able to switch to 4H on the move means you stay in the right mode for the surface without stopping in soft sand. Carry enough fuel for the full loop; there is no diesel between the camps on the wilderness trails.

When to Go

April to September is cooler and kinder to both you and the cooling system. Summer temperatures regularly pass 40°C — punishing on older V6 Pajeros in particular. Book camps months ahead; the wilderness trails release limited permits.
