2. Portable Compressor — The Free Upgrade Inside the Tyres

Tyre pressures transform off-road performance and tyre life. Soft sand: 1.0–1.2 bar. Corrugated gravel: 1.6–1.8 bar. Rocky crawling: 1.4 bar. Dry highway: back to the placard figure. A quality mobile UHF radio installed in the cab — brands like GME, Uniden, or the locally popular Icom range — is far more reliable than cellphone coverage in the Drakensberg, the Waterberg, or anywhere in Limpopo off the main routes. At R 2,500 to R 5,500 fitted with a roof-mounted whip antenna, it is not the cheapest item on this list, but it is the most important item in an emergency.

A handheld UHF or VHF is a useful backup and costs under R 1,000. What Did Not Make the List — and Why

A few accessories that get a lot of fitment centre attention but did not make this list, and the honest reason why.

  • Light bars. A 120W LED light bar is spectacular at night. It is also not legal for use on public roads in South Africa and will draw unwanted attention at roadblocks. Properly mounted and wired spotlights with manual switches and a protective cover when not in use are the legal alternative. Useful for farm and game reserve use; limited on public roads.
  • Suspension lift kits. A lift changes the Pajero’s geometry, may affect the Super Select transfer case angles, and typically requires wheel alignment and may affect steering components. Not a beginner modification. If you are considering a lift, research the implications for your specific generation and use a reputable specialist — not a general fitment centre.
  • Bull bars. ARB and Ironman bull bars are widely fitted on Pajeros. They protect against game strikes and provide a winch mounting point. Useful for game reserve regulars and remote travel. Not high priority unless you are specifically in that environment.
  • Drawer systems. Fantastic for organisation and camp setup. Expensive (R 12,000–R 25,000+) and heavy. Worth the investment if you are a regular overlander. Lower priority if you camp occasionally.
