Pajero Towing Capacity By Generation. What You Can Legally Pull

Every December the N1 south fills with Pajeros dragging caravans. Ask ten of those drivers what their Pajero towing capacity is and nine will say three tonnes. Ask the same ten what their gross vehicle mass is and you get silence.

That gap is where the trouble lives. The tow rating is the easy number. The numbers that decide whether you are legal sit on a plate under the bonnet.

Worse, South African law sets its own ceiling that has nothing to do with what Mitsubishi rated your vehicle to pull. For most Pajeros that ceiling lands well under 3 000 kg.

What each generation can actually tow

Braked means the trailer has its own brakes. Unbraked means it does not. The unbraked figure has been 750 kg on every Pajero sold here.

The early Gen 4, the NS, is a 2 500 kg vehicle. Mitsubishi only lifted the rating with the NT facelift in 2009. Plenty of 2008 Pajeros get sold as three tonne tow cars. They are not.

Ratings also move by market. Wikipedia records 3 500 kg approvals for the Gen 4 in Ireland and Germany. Your South African manual governs your vehicle.

Kerb mass is the vehicle empty but with fluids and a full tank. That 88 litre tank of diesel, roughly 74 kg of it, is already counted. Do not add it twice.

GVM is the most the loaded vehicle may weigh. Payload is GVM minus kerb mass, and it covers people, luggage, the tow bar, the roof rack and the download the caravan puts on your ball. GCM is the most the vehicle and trailer may weigh together on a weighbridge.

Why GCM catches people out, and why the Pajero is different

On most modern 4x4s GCM is a trap. Take the Pajero Sport. GVM 2 710 kg, braked rating 3 100 kg, GCM 5 400 kg. Add the first two and you get 5 810 kg. You are 410 kg short before loading a single cooler box.

The full size Pajero is honest about it. GCM 6 030 kg equals GVM 3 030 kg plus the full 3 000 kg tow rating, so you can run at maximum GVM and maximum trailer at once.

That sounds generous until you see the flip side. There is zero margin. Go a kilogram over GVM and you are over GCM too. The two limits fail together, and what pushes you over is payload, not the caravan.

A real December loadout, worked through

Take an NX Pajero. Kerb 2 315 kg, GVM 3 030 kg, so 715 kg of payload. Family of four heading from Gauteng to the South Coast with a 2 400 kg loaded caravan behind.

  1. Driver, partner and two kids. 240 kg.
  2. Roof rack with a rooftop tent and bedding. 95 kg, just under the 100 kg dynamic roof limit Mitsubishi publishes for Gen 3 and Gen 4.
  3. Fridge, food and drinks. 55 kg.
  4. Forty litres of water. 40 kg.
  5. Camping gear, chairs, table, braai and tools. 70 kg.
  6. Recovery kit and a second spare. 25 kg.
  7. The tow bar itself. 30 kg.
  8. Tow ball download from the caravan. 180 kg.

Total 735 kg against 715 kg of payload. You are 20 kg over GVM before anyone adds a bag of charcoal.

Now look at what you got right. The caravan is 2 400 kg, comfortably inside the 3 000 kg rating. Vehicle plus trailer is 5 430 kg, inside the 6 030 kg GCM. Every headline number says you are fine. The vehicle is overloaded anyway, and with no spare GCM margin you breach that too.

This is the normal outcome, not the extreme one. Take the roof rack off and you claw back 95 kg. Move the water into the caravan for another 40 kg. Payload is a budget, and towing spends most of it before you start.

The tow ball download trap

A Gen 4 Pajero allows 250 kg on the ball with a trailer up to 2 500 kg. Above 2 500 kg the limit drops to 180 kg.

Caravan makers work on roughly ten percent of trailer mass sitting on the ball. A 2 800 kg van at ten percent puts 280 kg on your coupling, over both limits. You cannot legally tow it that way, whatever the 3 000 kg number says.

So the Pajero’s effective ceiling is a trailer around 2 500 kg with a measured ball weight at or below 250 kg. Measure it, do not calculate it. A bathroom scale and a length of timber under the jockey wheel answers it in five minutes. Every kilogram on that ball also comes out of payload, and most lands on the rear axle.

What South African law actually requires

This is where the Mitsubishi figures stop mattering.

The tare rule. For a braked trailer, the trailer’s GVM may not exceed the tare mass of the towing vehicle. A Gen 4 Pajero has a tare around 2 300 kg, so your legal ceiling here is a caravan of about 2 300 kg, not 3 000 kg. For an unbraked trailer the GVM may not exceed half the vehicle’s tare, capped at 750 kg.

Licence codes. Code B lets you tow a trailer with a GVM up to 750 kg and no more. Above that you need Code EB, which covers trailers up to 3 500 kg GVM behind a vehicle with a tare under 3 500 kg. If you passed on the old Code 08 you already hold EB. If not, expect a learner’s test, a yard test that includes reversing the trailer, and a road test. Budget roughly R2 500 to R6 000 including training. Towing on a Code B licence is not a technicality. Your insurer can decline the claim.

Brakes by mass. Up to 750 kg GVM the trailer needs a parking brake. From 751 kg to 3 500 kg it needs a parking brake plus an overrun or service brake. Above 3 500 kg it needs a parking brake and a service brake. Almost every South African caravan sits in that middle band on overrun brakes.

Speed. There is no special lower limit for a light vehicle towing a caravan. Normal limits apply, 60 in town, 100 outside an urban area, 120 on a freeway. The 80 km/h rule targets goods vehicles and combinations over 9 000 kg combined GVM, which a Pajero and caravan never reach at around 5 500 kg. Legal and sensible differ. Above 100 km/h a caravan starts writing cheques your brakes cannot cash.

Registration and roadworthy. Your trailer must be registered and licensed with an annual fee, and needs a roadworthy test when ownership changes. New trailers need reflective chevron boards, and caravans need contour markings under Regulation 1192A.

Tow bars and what they cost

Fit an SABS approved bar. A mainstream bolt on bar from Brink or Bosal for a large 4×4 runs roughly R4 900 to R6 500 fitted, including a plug and play harness. Detachable bars push toward R10 000. Gen 2 and Gen 3 Pajeros usually need a fabricated bar, so get a written quote covering wiring and a rating plate.

Check the plate on the bar itself. It carries its own maximum trailer mass and nose weight, and a bar rated to 2 000 kg does not become a 3 000 kg bar because of the vehicle in front of it.

Most South African caravans run overrun brakes and need nothing from the vehicle beyond the plug. Electric brakes appear on imported vans and serious off road trailers. Those need a proportional controller from Redarc or Tekonsha, which adds a few thousand rand and a competent auto electrician.

Weight distribution hitches on a monocoque Pajero

They work. Tow tests of the Gen 4 with 240 kg on the ball reported visible rear sag and recommended one.

Two cautions. The Pajero is a monocoque, not a ladder frame, so load spreads through the body rather than a chassis rail. Use a matched hitch and have it set up properly rather than tightened by feel. And a hitch redistributes load, it does not raise a legal limit. Your GVM, ball limit and axle limits stay where they were. If your ball weight is too high, fix the caravan’s loading first. Move heavy items behind the axle line, not into the nose.

What towing does to the car

Fuel. Expect it to double. One tow test recorded 8.0 L/100km solo and 16.5 L/100km behind an 1 800 kg van. Owners towing 2 000 kg to 2 750 kg report 12 to 15 L/100km on flat highway and 20 to 25 L/100km in hills. From an 88 litre tank, plan fuel stops every 400 to 500 km. That matters between Beaufort West and Laingsburg.

The automatic. The Gen 4 five speed auto has a decent factory cooler. Owners monitoring transmission temperature by OBD2 while towing 2 750 kg report figures rarely above 100 degrees, better than several rivals. Still, halve your fluid interval if you tow often, and use the manual gate to hold a lower gear on long climbs instead of letting the box hunt.

Tyres. Raise the rear pressure when loaded. A Gen 4 placard calls for around 200 kPa front and 220 kPa rear unladen, and the laden column in your manual goes higher. Set them cold before you leave, not after two hours on the N2. Check the load index too, because plenty of aftermarket all terrains rate lower than the originals.

Super Select. Stay in 2H on tar. Wet tar, gravel or a dirt approach road, use 4H. On a slippery grass slope at a caravan park, 4HLc locks the centre diff and stops the wheelspin that leaves you sitting there. On a wet, weeded boat ramp use 4LLc for the torque multiplication and engine braking to reverse down and pull back up under control. Never use 4HLc or 4LLc on dry tar. What wears faster. Rear brake pads and discs, transmission fluid, rear shocks and springs, wheel bearings, and the clutch on manuals. Shorten your intervals rather than arguing with the maintenance schedule after something fails. The cost of ownership numbers assume a Pajero that does not tow. Add to them.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Pajero tow a 2 000 kg caravan?

Yes, easily, and this is the sweet spot. A 2 000 kg van sits inside the Mitsubishi rating, inside the South African tare rule for a Gen 4, and puts roughly 200 kg on the ball, under the 250 kg limit. Watch your payload, not your tow rating.

Can a Pajero tow 3 000 kg?

Mitsubishi rates the 2009 onward Gen 4 to 3 000 kg. South African law does not allow it behind a standard Pajero, because a braked trailer’s GVM may not exceed the vehicle’s tare of about 2 300 kg. Treat 2 300 to 2 500 kg as your real ceiling.

Is the monocoque body strong enough to tow?

Yes. The Gen 3 and Gen 4 use a monocoque with a built in ladder structure, and Mitsubishi rates it to 3 000 kg. What it changes is how load feeds into the body, which is why the ball limit sits lower than on a ladder frame rival. The Gen 4 guide explains that structure.

What licence do I need to tow a caravan in South Africa?

Code EB for anything over 750 kg GVM. Code B only covers trailers up to 750 kg. Old Code 08 licences already read EB on the card.

Why does the towing capacity drop to 2 500 kg?

It does not drop, the ball limit does. Above a 2 500 kg trailer, maximum tow ball download falls from 250 kg to 180 kg. Since most caravans put around ten percent of their mass on the ball, that limit binds long before the tow rating does.
