  • Quality compressor. You air down for soft sand, deep mud, and corrugated gravel. You air back up before returning to tar. An ARB Twin or equivalent is the minimum standard for a Pajero on a serious overlanding route.

Phase 2: Comfort and Communication

  • Roof rack and awning. The Pajero LWB roof becomes cargo and shade platform. Hannibal or Front Runner with an Eeziawn awning is the SA community standard. Carry luggage up, carry people in.
  • UHF radio. Channel 19 UHF is the SA bush standard. A fixed-mount GME or Icom with a roof-mounted whip is the correct installation. A handheld is the backup. For Namibia and Botswana, a satellite communicator (Garmin InReach) is worth serious consideration.
  • Drawer system or cargo organisation. The Pajero LWB boot is generous with the third row folded. A quality drawer system organises it so the fridge is accessible and the recovery kit is not buried. Not essential but transforms the usability of long trips.

Phase 3: Route-Specific Additions

  • Long-range fuel tank. The Gen 4 standard tank is 88 litres. On Namibian B-roads at 10 litres per 100km, that is 880km range — adequate for most routes. On the D-roads of northern Namibia or remote Botswana, a long-range tank (Front Runner 40L auxiliary is a popular SA fitment) adds meaningful buffer. Not essential for Namibia’s main tourist routes. Worth considering for Kaokoveld or central Botswana.
  • Snorkel. For regular Okavango or Chobe river crossings, a snorkel adds peace of mind beyond the factory wading depth. Not necessary for most SA trail use.
  • Bash plates. For rocky routes — Sani Pass, Naude’s Nek, technical Limpopo trails — steel bash plates on sump and transfer case eliminate an expensive vulnerability.

Southern Africa Routes — The Pajero in Context

Namibia: The Classic Route

Namibia is the most popular extended overland destination for SA Pajero owners. The country’s B-road network is well-maintained gravel that a stock Pajero handles easily. Sossusvlei requires soft-sand driving and should be done on reduced pressures. Damaraland’s rocky tracks (Twyfelfontein, Brandberg area) benefit from bash plates and a careful approach angle. Etosha is firm calcrete roads manageable at highway pressures. Fish River Canyon access roads are rough but not technical. Budget 10 to 14 days for a meaningful Namibia loop from the Orange River border. Average fuel consumption on mixed Namibia roads: 10 to 12 litres per 100km.

Botswana: The Test Route

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Makgadikgadi Pans are the destinations that genuinely test a Pajero’s soft-sand capability. Fine Kalahari sand requires 1.0 to 1.2 bar tyre pressures and 4HLc with Sand terrain mode. Momentum is everything — the driver who stops in deep sand without firm footing ahead is the driver who needs the MaxTrax. The Okavango Delta access routes require water crossings and mud. For the Moremi/Chobe area, plan for standing water year-round in some areas.

Lesotho: The Closest Test

Lesotho is the SA overlander’s backyard proving ground. Sani Pass is the most famous entry point — steep loose gravel on the SA side, rocky technical track on the Lesotho side. The Highlands plateau roads between Sani Top and Mokhotlong are paved but remote, narrow, and in winter may be snow-covered. Naude’s Nek, crossing from Maclear into Lesotho, is the highest vehicle pass in South Africa — rocky, remote, often muddy in wet season, spectacular in clear weather. Trans Kalahari Hikeway (TSSB) and African Overlanders’ Highway (AHHF)
